The following two Statements were attached to a report, dated November 16th 1934, by the General Manager to the Bank Committee regarding the rate of interest on deposits and the possibility of introducing a Special Investment Department.

 

STATEMENT A shows the growth of TSB balances from 1913 to 1933. In this period, the proportion of funds in Special Investment Departments grew from 21% to 48%

 

STATEMENT B shows the ratio between Ordinary Department and Investment Department deposits for each of the larger TSBs (date not stated). The two cities with populations similar to Birmingham had total deposits of £25,166,457 (Glasgow) and £11,200,123 (Manchester), compared with BMB's £17,063,593. The BMB's funds were accumulated over 15 years. The Glasgow Savings Bank was founded in 1836; the Manchester and Salford TSB was founded in 1818.
